Accounting for families with more than one balance sheet.
Entity-level books, consolidated reporting, bill pay and cash management for families who own operating companies, real estate, trusts and LLCs, and would rather not build a back office to keep track of it all.
Sample consolidated family balance sheet
$ thousands · quarter-end
| Entity group | Assets | Debt | Cash |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating companies (2) | 6,420 | 1,180 | 712 |
| Real estate LLCs (6) | 14,850 | 7,940 | 388 |
| Trusts (3) | 9,210 | 0 | 246 |
| Intercompany, eliminated | (640) | (640) | 0 |
| Family total | 29,840 | 8,480 | 1,346 |
Sample. Eleven entities on one page, with intercompany eliminated and cash by group. A real, redacted package replaces this.
Every entity has its own books and nobody has the whole picture. K-1s are late every year. Three different people pay bills. The CPA is the only one who knows how it all fits together, and you see them in March.
Who this is for
- Families with one or more operating businesses plus real estate, investment entities or trusts.
- A first- or second-generation family that has never had a formal family office and has outgrown "the CPA handles it."
- A small family office that needs an accounting back office without adding staff.
- An owner planning a sale who wants the family's finances organized before the proceeds arrive.
What we do
- Bookkeeping and monthly close for each entity: operating companies, holding companies, real estate LLCs and trusts.
- A consolidated monthly package: entity results, intercompany activity, a family-level balance sheet and cash position.
- Bill pay and cash management across entities, with approvals you control.
- Coordination with your CPA (K-1s, 1099s, estimates), estate attorney and wealth advisor. We account for investments; we don't manage them.
- Personal financial statements and lender reporting for family borrowing.
- Quarterly family reporting in plain English for family members who aren't accountants.
Discretion is part of the service
Family engagements are staffed by our Naperville team. Access is limited to named people, view-only wherever possible, with written approval for every payment. Documents move through a secure client portal, never as email attachments. We'll sign your NDA. We don't list family clients anywhere, including this page. References are available privately.
Working alongside your other advisors
Your CPA, your attorney and your wealth advisor each see one part of the picture. We keep the ledger they all rely on, and we'd rather be on a call with all three than be a bottleneck between them. We account for investments; we don't manage them, and we don't give tax or legal advice.
What a typical engagement looks like
Picture a family with two operating companies, a commercial real estate portfolio and three trusts. Four bookkeepers, no consolidated view, K-1s late every year. Twelve weeks in: one monthly package covering nine entities, bill pay through a single approval flow, and a quarterly family meeting with numbers everyone in the room understands.
"Thank you for getting our family and its various corporations, limited liability companies and trusts through another tax year. As a complex, but still small, family set of holdings that has grown over the years, we very much appreciate the long-term relationship with you that goes back now over two decades. That has allowed us to get always-available service to all of the family members at a reasonable fixed monthly fee, and we have comfort of working with you and the rest of the team that has been together for this extended period of time."
From a letter to Chris, November 2025. A family with nine real estate entities, five operating entities, nine trusts and a charitable foundation. Client for more than twenty years. Name withheld at the family's preference.
